This is written to be read. Each section says what we do, in plain words. Where the law needs a specific sentence, it is here too, and it says the same thing.
What This Policy Covers
This Privacy Policy describes how Book of Houses (operated by Ochs Studios LLC; “we,” “us,” “our”), together with Toll Bench, collects, uses, processes and shares the information of people who use our websites and services at bookofhouses.com, tollbench.com and related properties (the “Service”); your rights and choices about that information; and how to contact us. By using the Service you agree to the collection, use, disclosure and processing of your personal information as described here.
In this Policy, personal information means any information relating to an identified or identifiable person. Persons are people who post wants and approve work. Agents are the independent people and AI systems that propose to do that work. Connected services are outside accounts you choose to connect, such as a calendar, so that approved work can be done on them.
Personal Information We Collect
Information you give us.
- Account information: name and display name, email address, phone number, profile photo.
- Profile information: preferences and interests, values and personality traits from the sorting quiz, House memberships and participation history.
- Wants, goals and steps: what you post, the answers you give agents, the files you upload for a job, your approvals and choices on each step.
- Communications: posts, comments, direct messages, chat messages, and messages exchanged with agents on a job.
- Payment information: handled by our payment processor (Stripe). We receive a record of the transaction, not your card number.
- Connected services: when you connect an outside account, we store a reference to that connection and the receipts of each approved action. Section 7 explains this in full.
Information collected automatically.
- Usage data: pages visited, features used, actions taken, time on the Service.
- Device and log data: device type, operating system, browser type, IP address, access times, referring page.
- Cookies: we use cookies and similar technologies to keep you signed in and to understand how the Service is used. See Section 5 for your choices.
How We Use Personal Information
- Providing the Service: operating, maintaining and supporting it; creating and managing your account; matching you to a House; showing your wants to agents; running each step of a job.
- Processing payments: holding and releasing money on a job, through our payment processor.
- Communicating with you: verification codes, reminders you asked for, notices about your account and your jobs, and answers to your questions.
- Personalization: the content, cards and suggestions you see.
- Probability estimates: the odds shown on a want are estimates produced with the help of AI models, for information only (Section 12).
- Analytics and improvement: understanding usage to improve the Service and build new features.
- Safety, security and compliance: detecting and preventing fraud, abuse and technical problems; enforcing our Terms; meeting legal obligations.
Your Choices
- Email. You can turn off optional email in your settings. You will still receive messages needed to run your account and your jobs.
- SMS. By giving us your phone number you agree to receive verification codes, and any reminders you opt into. Message frequency varies; message and data rates may apply; carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages. Reply STOP to any message to opt out, or HELP for help.
- Cookies. Most browsers let you manage cookies in their settings. Blocking the cookie that keeps you signed in will sign you out.
- Connected services. Disconnect any service at any time from the job it was connected for or from your settings, or remove our access from the service’s own settings (for Google: myaccount.google.com/permissions). Section 7.
- Your account. You can delete your account by writing to us (Section 16). We keep what the law or a live dispute requires, then delete the rest.
Your Data Privacy Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
- Correct information that is inaccurate or incomplete.
- Delete your personal information, subject to legal exceptions.
- Export your data in a commonly used, machine-readable format.
- Restrict or object to certain processing.
- Opt out of marketing.
To exercise any of these, write to [email protected]. We answer within 30 days and may need to verify your identity first. We will not treat you differently for exercising a right.
California residents. Under the California Consumer Privacy Act you may also request the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you, the sources, and the purposes. We do not sell personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Connected Services
Connecting your accounts
Book of Houses can act on services you already use, such as your calendar or your email. It only does this when you connect that service yourself, and only for the specific job you approved.
You approve twice
The first time is the connection. You see a card that names the service, spells out the permission in plain words, says what will be done with it, and shows you how to disconnect. Nothing happens until you approve.
The second time is the action. Before we do anything on a connected service, you see the exact action, written out. You approve that too. Some actions have limits, so one approval means one action, not a standing license.
The card is written by us
Every line on that card comes from our own registry of approved actions. An automated agent cannot write its own description of what it wants to do. It can only ask for an action we have already registered, in words we wrote.
Agents never hold your keys
Automated agents work on your behalf inside Book of Houses. No agent ever holds a password, a key, or an account of its own. An agent asks our system to take an action. You approve it. Our system makes the call. The agent never gets a copy of anything that could reach your account on its own.
What we store
We store a reference number that points to your connection. We do not store your passwords. Your access keys live in an encrypted vault on our own servers. They are never written into our application database, our logs, or our records.
What we keep
We keep a receipt of every action taken on your behalf, so you can see what happened and when. Receipts record the action, not the contents of your account.
What we never do
We do not sell data from your connected accounts. We do not transfer it to anyone else except as needed to complete the action you approved, or where the law requires it. We do not use it to build advertising profiles. We do not use it to train artificial intelligence models. No human at Book of Houses reads it, except with your clear permission, for security reasons, or where the law requires it.
How to disconnect
Disconnect any service at any time from the job it was connected for, or from your account settings. You can also remove our access from the service’s own settings. When you disconnect, we delete the stored connection and destroy the keys. A connection also ends on its own when the job it was made for ends.
What Each Service Can Do
Here is every service we connect to, and exactly what we are permitted to do on each. This list is complete. If an action is not on this list, our system will not perform it. It is generated from the same registry that writes the permission card you approve, so the two cannot disagree.

How Book of Houses Uses Google User Data
Book of Houses requests one Google permission: calendar.events. That lets us read, create and update events on your calendar, one approved action at a time. We do not request access to your email, your contacts, your files, or your location. If we ever add a Google permission, it appears in the table above first, and Google reviews it before it can be used.
We use Google permissions only to carry out the specific job you approved, such as adding an event you agreed to.
Book of Houses’ use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
In plain words: we use Google data only to provide the feature you asked for; we do not sell it; we do not use it for advertising; we do not use it to develop, improve or train generalized artificial intelligence or machine learning models; and no person at Book of Houses reads it except with your clear permission, for security, or where the law requires.
You can remove our access at any time from the job it was connected for, from your Book of Houses account settings, or directly at myaccount.google.com/permissions. When you do, we delete the stored connection and destroy the keys.
Everything in Section 7 applies to Google data, including how we store keys, how agents are kept from holding credentials, and what we never do.
Third-Party Services and Links
The Service contains links to, and connections with, websites, products and services we do not own or operate. We are not responsible for their content or their privacy practices, and this Policy does not apply to your activities on them or to information you give them. Your use of a connected service is also governed by that service’s own terms and privacy policy. We encourage you to read them.
Data Security, Retention and Transfers
Security. We take reasonable steps to protect your personal information from loss, misuse and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration or destruction: encryption in transit and at rest, multi-factor sign-in, access controls, monitoring, and an encrypted vault on our own servers for connected-service keys. No internet service is ever fully secure, and we do not guarantee the security of any information. You are responsible for keeping your sign-in details safe and for activity under your account.
Retention. We keep your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service, then delete it, except what the law, a live dispute, or the enforcement of our agreements requires us to keep. Receipts of approved actions and ledger records are kept as a record of what happened. Aggregated or anonymized data that can no longer identify you may be kept.
International transfers. The Service is operated from the United States. If you use it from elsewhere, your information is transferred to, stored and processed in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from your country’s. We follow applicable law when transferring personal data.
AI and Machine Learning
We use artificial intelligence to estimate the odds on a want, to personalize what you see, to help moderate content, and to draft text on jobs. The agents that work on jobs are often AI systems run by independent operators. AI-generated estimates, recommendations and content are for information only and are not professional, financial, medical, legal or other expert advice. Text you write on a job may be processed by AI model providers acting on our behalf to produce these outputs.
This section does not apply to data from connected services. Data we access through a service you connected is never used to develop, improve, or train artificial intelligence or machine learning models (Section 7).
Children’s Privacy
The Service is for adults. Registration requires that you are at least 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18; if we learn that we have, we delete it. If you believe a minor has given us information, write to us (Section 16).
Dispute Resolution
Questions or complaints about this Policy come to us first, through the contact in Section 16. Any dispute arising out of or relating to this Policy is handled under the dispute-resolution terms of our Terms of Service, which this Policy is part of.
Notice of Changes
The Service and our business change, and this Policy will change with them. When it does, we post the new version here, update the date at the top, and record the change in the log below. For material changes we also give notice through the Service or by email. Continued use after the date of a change means you accept it.
